Elements of Movement
All arts have elements that make them up. Studying them helps to increase your knowledge, understanding, skill and appreciation of the arts. Just as we study rhythm, melody, form and expressive qualities of music we can also study elements of movement. Because our bodies move and our bodies take up space that is the first element to explore.
Space the final frontier.
General Space is the space you may move around in. General Spaces come in all shapes and sizes (Music Room, Stage, gymnasium, elevator, hallway, etc.) and affect the movement that can be demonstrated based on the locations limitations. We say, "Locomotor lets us move from here to there."
Self Space (personal bubble) is the space your body takes up in one place. Yet you can still move in many ways around your bodies center. This is called Non-Locomotor motion. We say "Non-Locomotor moves but doesn't go any where." Check out this example of Non-Locomotor motion and follow along.
